The Special Academic Convocation is a University tradition that recognizes the life and works of men and women in our society who exemplify the values of the University. It is a time when students, faculty and administrators come together to witness life exemplars of modern-day heroes.
This year the Board of Trustees has approved to confer the Traditional University Awards upon five (5) recipients. They are as follows:
JUSTICE LORENZO R. RELOVA
For having been a paragon of integrity during his career in the Philippine Judiciary, especially as Supreme Court justice during the turbulent years of the Marcos administration; and for having dedicated over forty years of service to the Ateneo Law School, which now celebrates its 75th year.
For her courageous work as an investigative journalist, tackling difficult topics such as the violence in Mindanao, environmental degradation and politics, and the Supreme Court; and for demanding accountability in light of instances of inequality and social injustice.
RANDOLF S. DAVID
In recognition of his work as opinion writer and sociologist that is inspirational in its own right, whose journalistic style exemplifies very balanced and well-thought out views that shed light on important aspects of current events. As both scholar and writer, we laud him not only for his dedication and excellence but also for being a professional-for-others.
LILIA B. DE LIMA
GOVERNMENT SERVICE AWARD
For bringing about the effective and responsible administration of a government institution; the accomplishments of the Philippine Ecozone Authority (PEZA) under her helm have not only reaped economic benefits, but gained the trust and respect of the community as well.
As head of PEZA, she put into action a strategy that has led to the burgeoning of the ecozones, which in turn, has benefitted investors, their customers, and the communities living near these regions. She has given others a chance to see that stamping out bureaucracy and imposing ethical standards is indeed achievable when striving for a more prosperous economy.
PARANGAL LINGKOD SAMBAYANAN
In recognition of their fidelity to duty to our nation’s Indigenous communities, Ilawan has gone above and beyond the spirit of volunteerism, empowering these groups towards achieving a unique kind of cultural and economic progress. Ilawan is seen to be integral in nation-building, strengthening the education of young people and fostering in them a sense of pride and responsibility towards their living heritage.
All administrators, faculty, student representatives, professionals and non-teaching personnel of school units and auxiliary units are expected to attend this University function.
Students of the various School units in Loyola and Makati are encouraged to witness the conferment and be part of this University tradition.
Other details pertinent to the participation of each Unit will be announced separately by the Units.
