Ateneo Debaters & Hilites team up and bag medals at Balangay Cup 2017

A contingent comprised of the multi-talented students of the Ateneo Debaters, Hilites, Zoom, and advanced Filipino classes from both the Ateneo Senior High School (ASHS) and Ateneo Junior High School (AJHS) bagged a number of top awards at the recently concluded Balangay Cup 2017. AJHS Debater Ryan Oquiza (La Storta/10-Owen) won first place and a gold medal in the Extemporaneous Speaking (Filipino category) competition by delivering a brief but meaningful speech on how both national healing and unity can be reconciled and achieved in the Philippines. ASHS Debater Luigi Alcañeses (12-A) took second place and won a silver medal in the Extemporaneous Speaking (English category) competition on the same topic. Ryan Oquiza
 
          Luigi Alcañeses   Meanwhile, Hilites MeJustin Nangel  mber Justin Nangel (Montserrat/8-Daniel) of AJHS won 2nd place and a silver medal in the English Essay Feature-Writing Competition, despite  competing against grade 12 students from other schools.
 
Ateneo Debaters Carlo Pastor (Pamplona/10-Mayer) & David Africa (Pamplona/10-Mayer) came in fourth place in the Quiz Bee competition. while ASHS Debater Mikko Vitug (11-Pongracz) represented Ateneo in the English Essay Writing Competition. AJHS students Raprap Montemayor (La Storta/10-Owen) competed in the Poster-making Event while Hilites’ Christian Dayao (Pamplona/10-Rubio) represented the school in the Filipino Essay Feature-Writing Competition.
 
With students from different orgs coming together, the contingent proved that Ateneans from various fields can cooperate to express their political views and also represent the school very well at the same time. The contingent would like to credit Mr. Joel Falgui of the AJHS English Subject Area for spearheading preparations for the contingent, and Hilites Moderator Mr. Kevin Jason Baetiong for allowing the two orgs to come together to represent the school at Balangay Cup 2017.
 
Balangay Cup is an event consisting of a series of lectures and multi-disciplinary competitions for high school students hosted by the UP Diliman Association of Political Science Majors (UP APSM). It took place on February 6, 2017, with close to a hundred students participating in the event.
