Santos wins 6 gold medals at UAAP 80 Swimming Championship

With a medal haul of six golds, three silvers, and two bronzes in the boys’ division of the UAAP Season 80 Swimming Championships, Ateneo de Manila University finished in third place, behind champion University of Santo Tomas and first runner-up De La Salle University. All six gold medals harvested by the Ateneo High School boys were courtesy of Ateneo Junior High School student Wacky Santos of Cardoner/10-Berthieu, who topped the 50m backstroke, the 100m backstroke, the 200m backstroke, the 400m individual medley, the 800m freestyle, and the 1500m freestyle. Santos’ sole silver medal was in the 200m individual medley.

Like Santos, Ateneo Senior High School student Rian Tirol of 11-De Brito also won multiple medals for individual events in the boys’ division. Tirol won two silvers for the 50m breaststroke and the 100m breaststroke, and a bronze medal for the 200m breaststroke.

Ateneo High School’s sole medal for a relay event in the boys’ division was a bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay courtesy of Jolo Viovicente (12-Bobola), David Dy (12-Anchieta), Joshua Vitangcol (11-Borgia), and Charles Ticbaen (La Storta/9-Fernandes).

The UAAP Season 80 Swimming Championships were held in the swimming pool of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex from October 12 to 15, 2017.
