College Class ’77 Representative Irma Cecilio (B.S Business Management) is calling for good attendance at the Mass on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Chapel inside Gesu Church, Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola campus.

The day marks 40 years to the date that College Class ’77 graduated in ceremonies held at the basketball courts.  That occasion also stood out as the first co-eds completed a full four-year Ateneo college experience.  A milestone in the history of an institution that had been famously an all male bastion.

Registration takes place at 11:00 A.M. before the Mass, continuing onto the Aerie Room of the Cervini Lounge where lunch will be served.

The female students, who took their place beside their male counterparts in 1973, comprised about 6 percent of the total student population – numbering then about 2,000 – or some 25 percent of the freshmen group.

Batch’77’s female members went on to high powered careers, among them Antonette Palma-Angeles, Ph.D. (A.B. Communication Arts/Philosophy), Vice President for the Ateneo Professional Schools; Susan Zamora-Prado (B.S. Business Management), EVP and CFO of Development Bank of the Philippines; Evelyn Tang-Uy (B.S. Chemistry), three-term mayor of Dipolog City (2007-2016) under whose watch it received 2015 Islands of Good Governance (model city) award in 2015 APEC ; Cynthia Concepcion-Baga (B.S. Psychology), one of only three Papal awardees in the Philippines to receive the Cross of Honour; Marissa N. Fernan (B.S. Psychology), Vice President at SM Prime Holdings,Region VII; Maria Agnes J. Angeles (B.S. Business Management), former EVP of Planters Development Bank and an active JCI Senate Philippines figure.

The boys also went on to excel, notably Luis Antonio G. Tagle (A.B. Pre-Divinity/Philosophy), one of three Summa Cum Laude recipients that year and now Archbishop of Manila and trusted lieutenant of Pope Francis; Raul S. Hernandez (A.B. Pre-Divinity/Philosophy), Philippine Ambassador to South Korea; bank executives Alfonso L. Salcedo, Jr. (A.B. Economics Honors), President and CEO of Security Bank, and Justo Antonio A Ortiz (A.B. Economics Honors), Chairman and CEO of Union Bank of the Philippines; as well as shipping boss Antonio R Moraza (B.S. Business Management), President and CEO of Aboitiz Power Corporation.

The commencement exercise of Batch ’77 also marked the centennial of national hero Jose Rizal’s graduation from the Ateneo (Ateneo de Municipal as it was formerly known) in 1877.  The young Jose finished  at the head of his class with the distinction of sobresaliente.

More activities planned throughout this Ruby Jubilee Year, will be announced, culminating in the Grand Alumni Homecoming on December 2, 2017.
