ALS Bar Send-Off: Above and Beyond

October 28, 2019

“You have what it takes,” Dean Joey Hofileña reminded the would-be bar takers in the Send-Off Mass for the 2019 Bar Candidates last Saturday, October 26. Dean Hofileña pointed out that they had successfully passed the academic rigors of Ateneo Law program and recited the names of several past bar examiners who were at one point professors of the candidates themselves. He observed that the examinees had gone through these examiners (and other professors even more stringent than them) and had succeeded.

The bar candidates were shown the overwhelming support of the Ateneo community by the heartfelt prayers as well as the press of people at the Send-Off Mass officiated by Fr. Sigmund “Munching” B. De Guzman, S.J., Chaplain and Counselor of the Ateneo Professional Schools. Part of the service also included the blessing of materials that the candidates would use for bar examinations.

After the mass, the Ateneo Law Student Council treated the bar candidates to dinner and a short program with rallying cheers, touching messages from representatives of the Ateneo Law community, and videos of thoughtfully curated photos to remind the candidates of their years in law school and just how far they’ve come. The ALS Student Council and Central BarOps also distributed the candidates’ Bar Bags at the Send-Off, complete with tumblers, emergency medicine, candies and snacks, maps of the examination venue, Palancas and prayer cards. The care packages also included notes from friends and letters from supporters like the students of the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH). Weeks before the event, volunteers were already painstakingly assembling these regulation-compliant clear bags as pabaon for the bar candidates.

In attendance at the Send-off were Law School administrators, faculty members, alumni and students led by Dean Hofileña. Also present were Dr. John Paul Vergara, Vice President for the Ateneo Professional Schools; Dr. Cenon Alfonso, ASMPH Dean; and the student councils from ASMPH and the Ateneo Graduate School of Business (AGSB) – all showing the aspiring examinees that the various segments of the Ateneo community were all pulling for them.

Encouraging the candidates to believe in themselves, Dean Hofileña urged them to “give your utmost for yourself, for your loved ones, for those who are waiting to be served by you, for your white and blue and for the greater glory of God.”
