On June 17-19, the V International Scientific Congress: Five Centuries Sailing the Legal World will be held at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. The intellectual and human bridges created between these academic institutions crystallized in the First International Congress held in Malaga in 2015. Taking advantage of the ephemeris of the fifth centenary of the circumnavigation of the world, our annual conference will bring together scholars from different disciplines to interact, share ideas and dialogue on issues of interest for both Asia, particularly the Philippines, and Europe.

The three-day conference will include panels and parallel sessions about the relations between ASEAN and the EU, International Trade Law and Competition Law, Migration, Human Rights and Social Justice, and Emerging Legal Issues with keynote speeches by Beatriz Pérez de las Heras, María Pilar Canedo, former ALS dean Sedfrey Candelaria, and María Isabel Torres Cazorla.

Ruben F. Balane, Professor of Civil Law at ALS will also give  one of the inaugural speeches about Spanish Influence on the Philippines’ Civil Law.

The conference is jointly organized by the Ateneo Law School, University of Deusto Law School, and the Facultad de Derecho of the University of Málaga.
