The day before Alumni Homecoming when he was set to be honored for being such an inspirational professor and mentor, Atty. Carlos “Chochoy” P. Medina visited the Ateneo Law School and was hosted at a lunch by the Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC), the office he led for two decades.

As Chochoy is now based in his hometown of Davao City, this visit was long-awaited and much-anticipated by the many former students who became his colleagues in the academe as well as in advocacy work. A professor of law for over twenty years, he taught Constitutional Law, International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law in Ateneo Law. He is also considered as an institution in alternative lawyering, having molded and mentored hundreds of law students who have undergone the AHRC Internship Program, a good number of whom have also found themselves in alternative law practice.

While with AHRC, Chochoy was also active in the peace negotiations with the Communist Party of the Philippines, having been the head of the government side of the monitoring committee on the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law. He was also one of the founders of the Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE).

In 2018, Ateneo de Manila University bestowed upon him the Parangal Lingkod Sambayanan, the University’s public service award.

On Alumni Homecoming Night, Chochoy was again recognized as an extraordinary member of the Ateneo Law community. A recognition truly well deserved!
