Hofileña appointed law school dean

The Ateneo de Manila University Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Atty. “Joey” Hofileña’s appointment as Dean of the Ateneo Law School (ALS) effective June 1, 2018.

Hofileña’s appointment was the recommendation of the Search Committee composed of Atty. Ruben F. Balane (Chairperson), Dr. Eduardo Jose E. Calasanz, Fr. Ismael Jose V. Chan-Gonzaga SJ, Atty.  Aleli Angela G. Quirino, and Dr. Maria Luz C. Vilches. He will be serving a term of three years, from June 2018 to May 2021.

The new dean currently chairs the Commercial Law and Intellectual Property Department of ALS where he has been a faculty member since 2013.  After passing the November 1987 Bar Examinations with flying colors, Joey joined SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan and was a partner there from 1996 through 2012, practicing within the firm’s Corporate department. He also undertook stints as an attorney at Johnson & Gibbs in Dallas, Texas and at McDermott, Will & Emery in New York City.

Apart from teaching at the ALS, Joey is a Visiting Professor for Commercial Law at Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s College of Law. He currently serves on the IBP Law Journal's Editorial Board.

Joey obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree (with honors) from the Ateneo de Manila in 1983 and proceeded to the Ateneo Law School where he completed his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1987 as Class Valedictorian and recipient of the Evelio Javier Leadership Award. In 1990, he was conferred a Master of Laws degree by Harvard Law School.
