Barangay Comembo residents, Ateneo law students and volunteer lawyers up bright and early on a Sunday morning for the legal mission

The Ateneo Legal Services Center (ALSC) conducted its first legal aid mission for school year 2016-2017 last October 23, 2016. The half-day activity was held at the Comembo Elementary School, with over 80 residents of Barangay Comembo, Makati in attendance.

ALSC Director Axel Rupert Cruz opened the mission by thanking the barangay officials for allowing the ALSC, volunteer lawyers and law students to impart their legal knowledge and provide legal services to the community.

Street Law students used handmade materials to illustrate Laws on Succession to the participants

Junior and senior law students who were enrolled in Street Law and Clinical Legal Education electives delivered information sessions on Succession; Land Titles; Marriage and Violence Against Women and Children; and Arrests, Bail and Oplan Tokhang. Each session lasted for 40 minutes, and covered a basic overview of the laws and frequently asked situational questions.

The teaching modules developed by the students involved group dynamics and synthesis activities, making the sessions interactive and engaging and helping the residents remember the key points from the lectures.

Games and other empowering participatory activities were used to synthesize lectures

After lunch, the residents were given the opportunity to discuss their legal issues and queries in private consultations with volunteer lawyers assisted by the students.

The mission formally ended with remarks from Comembo Brgy Captain Ariel Sarmiento and ALSC Supervising Lawyer Takahiro Kenjie Aman. Both expressed their desire to forge a partnership to further the legal awareness of both the barangay residents and the law students.
