54th Annual Conference "Critical Literary in ELT: Engaging the Word and the World"
Critical literacy aims to transform lives through empowerment. Distinct from critical thinking or higher order thinking that requires more cognitive processing, critical literacy education is concerned with “reading the word and the world” (Freire, 1972). It brings to light the social, cultural, historical and political forces that work to privilege and silence voices. ACELT recognizes the vital role that critical literacy plays in today’s globalized world where dogmatism, bigotry and parochialism drive people to be afraid of others (Janks, 2012). This year’s conference-workshop will therefore explore the various ways in which critical literacy can be developed in the English classroom.
This conference-workshop aims to provide teachers with appropriate sets of framework for teaching English language skills from a critical literacy perspective. It will help participants distinguish between critical thinking as a skill and critical literacy as a framework that may apply this skill. It will also guide the teachers into creating lessons that will allow their students to recognize how they are positioned by all social practices, including what they read, view or write, and how they can be informed agents that can critically evaluate and construct various kinds of texts. Through this conference workshop, teachers may be more equipped and empowered to facilitate in an English classroom that allows students to apply the concepts of critical literacy for a world that thrives in social justice and participatory democracy.
