WS# 1   Chances, Changes and Challenges: Preparing to Teach the New GenEd Course Purposive Communication in English

Recent educational reforms in the country have given educators a chance to change classroom practices that may no longer be relevant and appropriate in responding to the challenges of the 21st century learning milieu. What then do these academic reforms demand from our teachers and learners? How do these developments change the way we think and do things inside and outside the classroom? One of the changes that teachers need to prepare for is the teaching of a new General Education course called Purposive Communication in English. What is this course about? What does it entail? How does it help prepare learners meet the demands of both local and global communities? The topics, activities and tasks in this workshop are designed to help teachers prepare learners to communicate effectively in various multicultural contexts using multimodal materials.

WS# 2 Teaching Oral Communication in Various Contexts: Theories and Practice
Date:  February 3, 10 & 17, 2018
Venue:  Ateneo de Manila University
 
The SHS core subject ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT aims to help the students understand the nature and elements of oral communication in context, the functions/ purposes of oral communication, and the concept of communicative competence that requires understanding of speech context, speech style, speech act, and communicative strategy.
 
This seminar-workshop envisions at helping the GRADES 11 AND 12 Senior High School teachers and other interested participants to enhance their knowledge and competencies to effectively teach the course ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT.  Participants will have the opportunity to gain a more thorough understanding of the basic concepts and theories of communication, and form insightful and significant perspectives in the teaching of the course with emphasis on communication in different contexts. They will also design formative and summative assessment tools for their own classroom activities, as well as apply the knowledge and competencies gained from the training through a teaching demonstration with an outcome-based lesson plan.

The OBE Framework in a Multilingual Classroom:  Assessing Communication Skills Workshop

This seminar-workshop highlights the theories and principles that inform the critical role of assessment in teaching and developing the students’ communication skills “with the ends in mind”. The participants are expected to (1) articulate key performance indicators appropriate to their students, subject or program; (2) critique their own sample syllabi, rubrics, and other instructional materials and assessment tools; and (3) reflect on and evaluate their current practices in planning instruction, preparing or choosing instructional materials, and determining instructional techniques and strategies in accordance with the OBE Framework.
 
This is intended for the teachers across grade/ year levels.  Administrators and other interested educators are also welcome to take part in this workshop

The Research Paper: Engaging Students in Writing

The research paper is a complex writing task that students find boring and teachers find challenging to teach. How can writing teachers make it relevant to students? How do teachers engage students in writing? This training workshop will provide an opportunity for teachers to review concepts, issues, and practices in teaching writing. They will discuss ways to design learning tasks that have real-world significance for students, while offering them opportunities for problem-solving and critical thinking.
