Ateneo BOx Brings the Dogs Back and More in Week of Wonder
April 04, 2016
Last 14-18 March, the Ateneo Biological Organization - eXplore. eXperience. eXcel. (BOx) and the Department of Biology celebrated BioWeek 2016. This year's week-long event highlighting the biological sciences had the theme of "Wonderland," taking inspiration from the deliriously wondrous world of Lewis Carroll's imagination. This theme played into the Art Gallery--a photo and drawing exhibit and competition--and the Amazing Race, where the participants had to solve riddles and puzzles and even drink "potions" the way Alice did in her adventures. There were even Tea Parties at the SEC B Foyer on certain days of the week, where tea and pastries were served.
The week officially started with the second Bring Your Own Dog (BYOD) Day, now a beloved and anticipated activity in the Loyola Schools. This year, over 300 members of the LS community visited the 14 dogs at the SEC Field. As midterm season formally started that week, many students were able to benefit from the therapeutic nature of interacting with dogs.
On the Saturday of that exciting week (19 March), 147 members and volunteers went to Brgy. Quilitisan in Calatagan, Batangas to plant mangrove seedlings in the Calatagan Mangrove Forest Conservation Park (Ang Pulo). They were assisted by leaders and members of Talimusak, the People's Organization (PO) in charge of mangrove conservation in the area. BOx was able to plant over 700 propagules of Rhizophora mangroves that day. After this, they took a short trip to a beach in Lian, Batangas for a mini-sportsfest and free swimming time. Before leaving for Manila in the afternoon, close to Earth Hour, the participants expressed their solidarity with the global efforts at sustainability by making the public statement that "Ateneo BOx pledges to change climate change."
BioWeek 2016: Wonderland was sponsored by Mom and Tina's Bakery Cafe (Major Sponsor), Barkyard PH, BN Jimenez Construction, Farmhouse Hotel and Cafe, Swish, pH care, and New Gapan City Shell.
