Microscopy Workshop for Public High School Teachers

Over two consecutive Saturdays (21 and 28 May), the Department of Biology hosted a workshop on basic microscopy skills for nearly 400 Quezon City public elementary school teachers. The workshop was called "Use of Microscopes in Developing Science Concepts and Skills" and provided hands-on training for the participants, with the primary objective of empowering them to use the microscopes in their respective schools and thereby enhance basic science education. The workshop began with plenary sessions at the Leong Hall Auditorium (21 May) and Escaler Hall (28 May) on the history of microscopy (Speaker: Dr. Jared Billena, Instructor, Department of Biology), the parts of the compound light microscope (Speaker: Mr. Ronald Cruz, Instructor, Department of Biology), and proper handling of the microscope (Speaker: Ms. Trinket Canlas, Instructor, Department of Biology). The teachers then proceeded to the biology laboratories at the Science Education Complex (SEC) B for the laboratory sessions. Here they prepared wet mounts using biological stains, and most importantly, used the compound light microscopes. The laboratory activities were supervised by faculty and Teaching Assistants of the Department, and by the officers of the Ateneo Biological Organization eXplore eXperience eXcel (BOx).

The workshop was organized by Biology faculty members Dr. Billena and Mr. Cruz and BS Biology '05 alumna Sabrina Ongkiko, who teaches at Culiat Elementary School, in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) Quezon City Division. Distinguished guests were Dr. Merab Chan, Chairperson of the Department of Biology; Dr. Fabian Dayrit, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering; and Dr. Shirley Guillermo, DepEd QC Division Supervisor for Science.
