Field Reports on ACL 2017: Vigan, Ilocos Sur

The Ateneo Cultural Laboratory (ACL) is a six-unit summer course on the study, conservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of particular Philippine districts, towns or cities. As part of the Cultural Heritage Program of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the ACL equips students with the theoretical and methodological skills to carry out studies in socially meaningful landscapes, built heritage, indigenous health and food practices, arts in crafts and performance, local games, rituals and festivals, the narration of local history and cultural heritage through tour scripts, and the teaching of cultural heritage through educational aids for high school. Their findings are presented publicly before various stakeholders and submitted to relevant NGOs and the local governments concerned so that they can be used for development plans that will benefit the community. Since 2009, the ACL has been held in Tayabas, Intramuros, San Juan, Bohol, Kalibo, Nasugbu & Balayan in Batangas, Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Silay in Negros Occidental, and Vigan in Ilocos Sur. It is directed by Dr. Fernando N. Zialcita.
