New deans for the Loyola Schools, including SEALD’s first
Three new deans have been announced for the Loyola Schools, including the first ever for the newly-formed School of Education and Learning Design (SEALD).
In a series of memoranda issued Thursday, 25 March 2021, Fr Roberto C Yap SJ, University President, announced the appointment of the new leaders of the School of Science and Engineering, School of Social Sciences, and SEALD.
Fr Johnny C Go SJ has been named as the first-ever Dean of SEALD, the fifth Loyola School, appointed to an initial 3-year term. His term begins on 1 April 2021.
Go is an Associate Professor of the Department of Education and is Director of the Ateneo de Manila Institute for the Science and Art of Learning and Teaching (SALT) which he established in 2017. He also serves as the Education Secretary for Asia Pacific of the Jesuit Conference of Asia-Pacific since 2016. From 2015 -2019, he was a member of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Teacher Education Technical Panel.
He holds an EdD from UCL Institute of Education, University College London, UK and National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (2016). He obtained his MA in Theology (1998), MA in Philosophy (1992) and AB Psychology (1983) from Ateneo de Manila University.
Prior to teaching in Ateneo de Manila, he served as Executive Director of Jesuit Communications Foundation (Jescom) from 1997-2002, and as President of Xavier School in San Juan City from 2001-2013. He was a Board Member of the Ateneo de Manila University Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2013.
Dr Czarina A Saloma-Akpedonu is appointed to an initial 3-year term as Dean of the School of Social Sciences starting 1 June 2021. Saloma-Akpedonu succeeds Dr Fernando T Aldaba at the helm of SOSS.
Saloma-Akpedonu has been with the University since 1994 in different capacities as researcher, faculty member, and administrator. "Bopeep," as she is fondly known, is Professor and former Chair (2005-2010; 2017-2018) of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and served as Director of the Institute of Philippine Culture (2007-2013). She currently chairs the University Committee on Decorum & Investigation.
She obtained her doctoral degree in Sociology from Universität Bielefeld in Germany (2002), her MA in Population Science from Peking University, China (1994) and her BA in Sociology from the University of the Philippines in Diliman (1991).
Outside Ateneo, she also hold leadership roles in CHED (Chair, Technical Committee for Sociology); Philippine Social Science Council (Treasurer); and the Women's and Gender Studies Association of the Philippines (President). She was also President of the Philippine Sociological Society from 2006 to 2008 and Chair of the CHED Technical Panel for Social Sciences and Communication in 2013-2014. In 2007, she received the Outstanding Young Scientist award from the National Academy of Science and Technology.
Dr Raphael A Guerrerro has been named as Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, succeeding Dr Evangeline P Bautista, who has served as dean since 2012. He will serve an initial 3-year term starting 1 April 2021.
Guerrero, known in the SOSE community as "Paeng," is a Professor of the Department of Physics where he has taught since 2000. He has held various administrative roles as Acting Dean of the School of Science and Engineering (January – May 2019), Chair of the Department of Physics (2016 – 2019) and Coordinator of the Ateneo Photonics Laboratory (2001 – present). He was President of the Physics Society of the Philippines (PSP) in 2011 and 2012 and currently serves as a member of the Photonics Technical Panel of the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development.
He holds a PhD in Physics (2005) from the University of the Philippines in Diliman where he also obtained his MS (2000) and BS (1998) in Physics. His areas of specialization are lasers and photonics, volume holography and elastomeric optics. He was recognized as an Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Academy of Science and Technology in 2013 and has held the Fr Heyden SJ Professorial Chair in Physics from 2010 to 2021.
The University President, in his memos, also expressed deep gratitude for Aldaba and Bautista as they end their terms as deans.
He also called on the Ateneo de Manila community to support the new deans in their new missions.
