ASHS Debaters Are Back-To-Back Champions Of Rotary National Debate Championship

For the second year in a row, and the third time in four years, the Ateneo Debaters have emerged as Grand Champions of the Rotary National Debate Championship. The winning team was comprised of Red Nadela (12-A), Phil Javellana (12-H), and Paulo Valencia (12-N), who defeated over a hundred other debaters from schools in Metro Manila to win the prize.
 
In the Grand Final, the trio defeated the team from La Salle Greenhills A by successfully opposing the motion “This house believes that the Philippines should adopt a two-party system.” They won on a 5-2 split decision before a panel of seven judges.
 
Team ASHS B, comprised of Carlos Tiu (12-A), Nicky Solis (12-B), and Mikko Vitug (11-Pongracz) reached the Semifinal stage of the competition. Team AJHS A, comprised of David Africa (10-Mayer), CJ Carlos (10-Mayer), and  Javy Pineda (10-Owen) reached the Quarterfinal stage of the competition. Team AJHS B, comprised of Carlo Pastor (10-Mayer), Luis Amatong (9-Luis), and Gareth De Leon (8-Favre) reached the Pre-Quarterfinal stage of the competition.
 
Also for the third time in four years, the Overall Best Speaker of the Tournament was an Atenean. AJHS Debater David Africa took home the coveted highest individual speaker award, while Nadela and Valencia of ASHS tied for 4th Overall Best Speaker, and Pastor got a medal as the 7th Best Speaker of the tournament.
 
The Rotary National Debate Championship is in its 4th edition, hosted annually by the Rotary Club of San Francisco Del Monte. The event was held in the Quezon City Science High School from March 11-12, 2017.
