Ocoma and Vitug are Best Speaker awardees of IDeA 2 debate

The teams of Matti Tan (11-Realino) & David Africa (11-Tsuji) and Julia Isabelle Ocoma (12-Gonzalez) & Mikko Vitug (12-Pro) reached the grand finals of the Interscholastic Debate Association (IDeA) 2 Invitational Championship. The prestigious tournament was held at Xavier School, San Juan from February 17 to 18, 2018 with 52 teams from private and public schools all over Metro Manila competing for the coveted title. In the Grand Finals, Ocoma & Vitug defended the motion, “This house believes that representative democracy has failed” from Opening Government whereas Tan & Africa opposed from Closing Opposition. They conceded the victory to Closing Government, represented by debaters from Immaculate Conception Academy.

Individually, Tan and Africa were distinguished as 3rd and 6th Best Speakers of the Tournament respectively. Ocoma was recognized as the Best Speaker of the Final and 5th Best Speaker of the Tournament, whereas Vitug was awarded as the Overall Best Speaker of the Tournament. Semifinalists Javy Pineda (11-Garnet) and Miguel Yulo (12-Walpole), as well as CJ Carlos (11-Wright) and Matthew Mercado (11-Bellarmine) also harvested individual achievements. Yulo was awarded as the 8th Best Speaker of the Tournament, while Carlos and Mercado were recognized as the 3rd and 2nd Best Speakers of the Tournament, respectively. The team of Pep Danguilan (12-Walpole) & Matthew Varona (11-Hurtado) also excelled, breaking 26th as reserve break, in addition to both being distinguished as the 9th Best Speakers of the Tournament.

The Interscholastic Debaters Association (IDeA) refers to a conglomeration of schools from Metro Manila.

The ASHS Debaters are moderated by Ms. Amyrrha Estolloso. The team was coached by Miguel Ventura, Nicolo Fortuna, and Red Nadela for the competition. The Ateneo Debaters extend their gratitude to Dr. Carmela Oracion, Principal of the ASHS, and the ASHS Office of Student Activities and Formation for their support in the competition.
