Blue Eaglets place 3rd in UAAP 81 fencing

Comprised of students from the Ateneo de Manila Junior High School and Senior High School, the Ateneo High School fencing team brought home 16 medals from the UAAP Season 81 Fencing Championship held from Nov. 22 – 25, 2018 at Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City. Of these 16 medals, four were won in individual events while twelve were won by three quartets in three team events.  

The boys who won for individual events were Jian Miguel Bautista of HUMSS/12-Navarro (silver in epee + bronze in foil), Josh Bucad (bronze in epee) of STEM/12-Ogilvie, and Enrico Suplico (bronze in saber) of Montserrat/10 –Maunoir.

Team Ateneo also placed 2nd in one team event and 3rd in two team events. Winning silver medals in the boys’ team epee event were Jian Bautista, Josh Bucad, JebTorizo (GA/12-Carvalho), and Jan Aguilar (STEM/11-San Vitores). Winning bronze medals in the boys’ team foil event were Jeb Torizo, Jian Bautista, Alecc Arevalo (ABM/11-Angelis), and Seth Cucio (HUMSS/11-Nakaura). Also winning bronze for the boys’ team saber event were Enrico Suplico, Polo Llagas (STEM/12-Walpole), Thomas Cabrera (Cardoner/8-Azevedo), and Mako Guarin (STEM/11-Torres).

Ateneo placed 3rd overall in the junior boys’ division of the UAAP 81 fencing tournament, behind seven-peat champion UE and 1st runnerup DLSZ.
