Mel Sta. Maria obtained his Bachelor of Laws with honors in 1982 from the Ateneo Law School.  In  1987, he obtained his Master of Laws Degree in Banking Law from the Morin Center for Banking Law Studies at Boston University School of Law. He was a 1993 fellow at the International Law Commission in Geneva, Switzerland. 

Mel is the current Dean of the Far Eastern University Institute of Law, a post he’s held since November 2013. He is a lecturer at the Philippine Judicial Academy where he is the Vice-Chair of the Department of Special Areas of Concerns. He is also a member of the Legal Education Board’s Committee for the Revision of the Law Curriculum.
He has authored three law textbooks:  “Persons and Family Relations Law”, “Court Procedures in Family Law Cases” and “Obligations and Contracts: Text and Cases”.  He has also compiled his commentaries posted on in two books “READ MY MIND” and “WHAT’S THE POINT”.
He is the resident legal analyst of TV5 and co-hosts the TV/radio show “RELASYON”. For his hosting, he was named Best Public Service Host for Radio at the 2015 Golden Dove Awards.
Mel has been teaching at the Ateneo Law School since 1986.
