Trendwatcher Series 29: An Engagement Model for Filipino Employees

April 06, 2016

The 29th Trendwatcher Series was held last April 6, 2016 at the Discovery Suites Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City. This Trendwatcher was entitled “An Engagement Model for Filipino Employees,” wherein Ateneo CORD launched its general employee engagement survey. Aside from Mendiola “Joy” T. Calleja, PhD as the main presenter of the session, there were two (2) guest speakers, Ms. Lea Wong (Senior VP for Human Resource and Administration, Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corporation) and Ms. Sheryl Lim (Team Lead for Workforce Engagement, ABS-CBN Corporation), seasoned experts in HR, who shared their thoughts and experiences in employee engagement, specifically the interventions they conducted after using CORD’s engagement survey.
The session was hosted by Therese Ocampo, Psychometrician (Ateneo CORD). The opening remarks were given by Vanessa “Baban” Villaluz, MA, Director for Knowledge and Innovation (Ateneo CORD).

The session began with a presentation by Joy Calleja, PhD, on the research and development process of CORD’s engagement survey. She began by introducing Western literature on employee engagement, followed by the rationale to develop a model specifically for Filipino employees because of our unique work culture. She then presented the qualitative and quantitative phases of the study, ending with the actual model and recommendations for Filipino-centric engagement interventions.
An open forum followed, wherein the registered participants asked questions to the three speakers. This was then followed by a 20-minute break where everyone was invited for snacks and drinks.

After the break, the learning session resumed with a discussion among the guest speakers. Each took turns sharing their history as HR practitioners, specifically in the field of employee engagement. They provided an overview of their experience using CORD’s engagement survey, their significant findings from the survey, as well as the interventions they designed in accordance with the results.

To close the Trendwatcher session, the speakers were awarded tokens of appreciation by Jemima Tan and Erald Ilac, PhD, Associate Director for Basic Research (Ateneo CORD). Dr. Ilac also gave the closing remarks to the plenary afterwards. The entire afternoon was then capped off with a group photo with the presenters.
