Generosity and Compassion: GS70 Spirit in Action

June 08, 2021
The year 2020 was supposed to be a milestone year for Ateneo Grade School’s (AGS) Class of 1970 (GS70). A year-long celebration to mark their Golden Anniversary was in the works- from a kick-off reunion in March to a grand reunion by December. But the coronavirus pandemic altered their plans. Faced with logistical and public health challenges, the batch pivoted in creative ways to reach out, reconnect, and step up to do whatever is most valuable to help the fight against COVID-19.  From their Memorabilia Drive, they produced commemorative shirts, pandemic masks, and a photobook- the Chronicle 70 Golden Edition.

In March 2021, they presented a PhP 50,000 gift to Ateneo de Manila University in hopes of helping their beloved Ateneo continue its mission to serve and protect those in need. During the turnover ceremony with Fr Yap,  Office of Alumni Relations Director Fr Norberto Bautista  SJ, and the late AGS Headmaster Fr Salustiano de la Rama SJ, GS70 representatives asked how they could still help those in greater need. The pandemic, after all, has robbed many of opportunities to study, earn a living, and provide for their families.

In less than three months,  GS70 returned to the University with an even bigger gift. On 1 June 2021, they presented a PhP 500,000 donation to Fr Yap and Fr Bautista. The gift is earmarked for two projects: PhP 400,000 for Ateneo Tulong Sulong, a livelihood program for employment and entrepreneurship for underprivileged communities; and PhP 100,000 for the Feeding Program of Ateneo Center for Educational Development.

University administrators led by University President Fr Roberto C Yap SJ receive the check donation from AGS'70 representatives.

Fr Yap was inspired and impressed by the batch’s perseverance: “I am pleasantly surprised by your speed. It’s just June and you already came back with this donation. Thank you very much.”

“AGS 70 will continue to help those in need and rise to any challenge and opportunity to be men for others the Ateneo way. We will always embody the values of compassion, tolerance, humility, reconciliation, and selflessness,” was the response of  Jingle Severino, GS’70 Overall Coordinator.
