February 22, 2018

Students from the Ateneo de Manila University won the 10th Local Finals of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge held last February 15, 2018 at the PSE Auditorium in Ortigas, Pasig.

Ateneo’s IRC team, called Wolfe Financial, is composed of seniors Rafael Abaño IV, Katrina Chan, Jan Adrian Chan, Joshua John Mitchell Chua, and Megan Grace Lo. They were coached by faculty mentor Riche Levin Lim (BS ME ’13) from the Finance and Accounting Department and industry mentor Mark Alan Canizares (BS LM ’99) from Manulife.

For this year’s local IRC, participants were asked to write an initiation report for the stock of STI Education Systems Holdings (STI:PM). The top four teams with the highest grades for the written report advanced to the local finals, where they gave a ten-minute presentation to a panel of judges, followed by a ten-minute question-and-answer portion.

The judges included IFE Management Advisers President Marvin Fausto, Wealth Securities Head of Research Ricardo Puig, COL Financial Research Analyst Charles Ang, and Century Pacific Investor Relations Officer Giovanna Vera.
Wolfe Financial bested teams from the University of Santo Tomas, De La Salle University-Manila, and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.

They took home a cash prize of Php 100,000 and will be representing the Ateneo and CFA Society Philippines in the Asia-Pacific Regionals on April 25-26 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Should they win the regional round, they will compete in the Global Finals on April 27.

The team’s victory last February 15 marks the fourth consecutive time the Ateneo has won the local IRC finals and Ateneo’s fifth national IRC title overall. The Ateneo was also crowned Asia-Pacific Regional Champions twice in a row in 2015 and 2016.

Team Wolfe Financial, now Team Ateneo and Team Philippines, aims to deliver Ateneo’s third regional title, Ateneo’s first global title, and the Philippines’ third global title as it competes in the regional finals.

The 10th Local Finals for the CFA Institute Research Challenge was made possible through the competition’s sponsors: COL Financial, Kaplan Schweser, and Laurin.
