November 08, 2021

On the 27th of September 2021, the Ateneo de Manila University community, along with cherished friends and family, held a memorial mass, organized by the Economics Department, for Dr. Victor S. Venida, who passed away last September 27. Dr. Venida was an esteemed professor from the Department of Economics, Development Studies, and the European Studies Program. At the age of 63, Dr. Venida – or Bobing, as his friends and family used to call him, had touched the lives of many, giving out priceless memories of laughter, travels, and life-long lessons for those who had the honor of making his acquaintance.
In memory of the life and death of Dr. Bobing Venida and his brother Pedro, bereavement masses were held on the weekend of October 2 and 3 via Zoom. Both occasions were well-received by a huge online crowd and proceeded solemnly.  There was also an overwhelming amount of support for the family coming from close friends and colleagues who shared their heartfelt messages through a tribute program that was held after each mass.

The October 2 mass was presided by Fr. Joaquin Jose Mari “Jonjee” C. Sumpaico III SJ., the Vice President for Basic Education. Fr. Whereas the tribute program that transpired on both days was headed by Mr. Genesis Kelly S. Lontoc, Associate Chair of the Economics Department. The program included eulogies from Dr. Cathy Vistro-Yu, Dr. Rudy Ledesma, and Dr. Leland dela Cruz, as well as a compilation of video tributes coming from Dr. Venida’s former colleagues.

The program was  greatly appreciated by the Venida family, and speaking on behalf of them was Dr. Bobing’s older brother, Mr. Roberto Venida. It ended with closing remarks from the Chair of the Economics Department, Dr. Philip Arnold Tuano.

The holy gathering last October 3 was officiated by Fr. Roberto “Bobby” C. Yap SJ, President of the Loyola Schools. The post-mass program featured live tributes from Dr. Emma Porio, Mr. David Salvosa, Dr. Ronald Mendoza, Mr. Sedfrey Candelaria, and a message from Dr. Kenneth See which was read by the program host, Mr. Genesis Lontoc. In addition to a video tribute showcasing the joyful highlights of Dr. Venida’s life, there was also an open-floor portion of the program wherein members of the audience shared their own precious stories and memories with their beloved Bobing.
After the family’s response by Mr. Roberto Venida, the concluding remarks were given by the Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Professor of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Dr. Bopeep Saloma-Akpedonu.

The Ateneo Community continues to pray for the Venida family, offering heartfelt condolences and gratitude for sharing the vibrant life of Dr. Bobing. May God continue to bless those who live on, that they may honor his memory and forever cherish the stories of laughter, lessons, inside jokes, and travels around the world. Rest in peace, Dr. Victor “Bobing” S. Venida.
